BROEDERLAM, MELCHIOR. - Flemish-Burgundian painter, b. at Ypres; documents concerning him date from 1381 to 1409. He was one of the principal artists at the court of the dukes of Burgundy, where, in 1385, he became "valet de chambre" to Philip the Bold. Having developed under the influence of Parisian and Burgundian miniaturists, as well as of Italian and Flemish painting, he prepared in a certain way the art of the van Eycks (v.).
Many works, including those of his activity as a portraitist, are lost; there remain, however, the famous paintings for the altar of the Charterhouse of Champmol (museum of Dijon; the sculptures are by Jacques de Baerze). The altar can be dated between 1392 and 1399, and its paintings represent the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Presentation in the Temple, and the Flight into Egypt. They are one of the most precious documents of the late Gothic, already full of small naturalistic themes; and they are therefore fine examples of the "international-courtly style," which, thanks also to B., spread to Italian painting of the early 15th century. In the Mayer van den Berg collection in Antwerp there are two panels (Nativity and Adoration of the Child) that belong to the circle of B. and were, without sufficient grounds, assigned to the Champmol altar. Even the attribution of a drawing in the museum of Basel is not certain. - See Pl. IX.
