BREU, JÖRG THE ELDER - Flight into Egypt. Nuremberg, German National Museum.
BREU, JÖRG, THE ELDER. - Painter, woodcut artist and designer of stained glass, b. in Augsburg in c. 1475, d. there in 1537. Active (after a study trip to Austria), from 1502 in Augsburg, he shows himself to be a follower of Ulrich Apt, of Holbein the Elder (v.), and of Burgkmair (v.).
His principal works (1501) are found in the convent of Herzogenburg (Austria) and in the museums and churches of Augsburg, Innsbruck, Basel, Vienna, Frankfurt, Nuremberg, etc. In the two years 1514-15 he resides in Italy, where he undergoes the influence of the Italian Renaissance, as also demonstrated by his woodcuts for the Missal of Regensburg, the Breviary of Regensburg and others. With Dürer he collaborates on the famous Gebetbuch of the Emperor Maximilian I.
His son Jörg, called the YOUNGER, b. in c. 1510 in Augsburg, d. there in 1547, succeeded him in 1534 as head of the workshop. Woodcut artist, painter and miniaturist, he underwent the influence of Venetian painting.
