HERZOGENBURG. — Abbey of the Lateran Canons Regular of St. Augustine, in Lower Austria, diocese of St. Pölten. It has charge of 16 incorporated parishes.

Bishop Ulrich I of Passau founded in 1112, in the enormous forests of that time, near the river Traisen, a monastery for Canons Regular, under the title of St. George (today St. Georgen an der Traisen), above all to establish a center of religious and civil culture. Rudiger, bishop of Passau, transferred the seat in 1244 to a more suitable place, H.; the original church was dedicated to St. George in 1267. During the Protestant Reformation the house was close to extinction, but then it recovered and flourished again. In the Baroque era, grandiose works were undertaken at H. as well: the church was made Baroque, through the work of Fr. Mungenast and of Fischer v. Erlach, with frescoes by B. Altomonte. The convent too was partly rebuilt by the same Mungenast and by J. Prandauer, but not finished. It has a grandiose hall for festivities and a beautiful library.
