HERZEN, Aleksandr Ivanovič (Gercen in Russian spelling). - Russian politician and writer, b. in Moscow on 25 March (6 April) 1812, d. in Paris on 3 February 1870. Influenced by Saint-Simon and by other socialist currents, he resided in the West, from where he directed the struggle against the Russian autocracy.
Famous is his journal Kolokol (which penetrated clandestinely into Russia) and the almanac Poljarnaja Zvezda. He was in contact with figures of the Italian Risorgimento, in particular with Mazzini and with Garibaldi. Of notable literary value, as well as of vast historical interest, is an autobiography entitled Passato e pensieri.
A typical Russian "gentleman" of the nineteenth century, he felt drawn toward an individualistic socialism (closer to Proudhon and to Bakunin than to Marx); his "anti-bourgeois" spirit remained jarred by the West (which he had exalted in his youth) and so he took refuge in the idealization of the "Russia of the future," which, because of primitive "pre-capitalist" survivals, seemed to him closer to collectivism than "bourgeois Europe." A tormented spirit, he underwent the influence of positivism and of materialism, contradicted nevertheless by frequent doubts of an idealistic stamp and always dominated by a humanitarianism not devoid of a religious and national background.
