BULL, GEORGE. - Anglican writer, b. at Wells on 25 March 1634, d. on 17 Feb. 1710. In 1680 Oxford declared him a "doctor" and, in 1705, he was promoted bishop of St. David's.
His fame is still alive and linked to his writings on early Christian history. Let us mention the principal ones: the Harmonia Apostolica (London 1669), in which he brings out the harmony between the apostles James and Peter on the subject of faith and works; the Defensio Fidei Nicenae (Oxford 1685-88), which is his masterpiece - republished also in Italy with additions and notes by Zola, a teacher at Pavia (1784) - in which he proves how the Nicene definitions reflected doctrines professed even earlier; Judicium Ecclesiae Catholicae trium priorum saeculorum (1694); Primitiva et Apostolica traditio dogmatis de Jesu Christi divinitate (1705), besides three volumes of his sermons.
