ZOLA, GIUSEPPE. - Jansenist, born in 1739 at Concesio near Brescia, died there in 1806 fortified by the Sacraments.
He studied under the Filippini, the Theatine Scarcella, and the Benedictines, among whom was Rotigni. Librarian of the Queriniana Library, still very young and teaching theology in the diocesan seminary, he became an intimate and spiritual advisor to Pietro Tamburini (q.v.), soon sharing in the fortunes of his friend. Having lost his positions due to the scandal caused by Tamburini’s *De Summa* (q.v.), he subsequently became rector of the Fuccioli College in Rome, professor at the University of Pavia, teacher in the Liceo at Brescia, and again in Pavia, holder of the chair of history of laws and diplomacy. Reserved, reflective, averse to polemics, he sacrificed his life, intellect, and reputation in active collaboration and complete devotion to Tamburini, to whose works and controversies he anonymously contributed *Theologicarum praelectionum specimen* (Brescia 1775), *De locis theologiae moralis* (Pavia 1785), and other pamphlets, leaving some works in manuscript. In ecclesiastical history, he followed Tillemont and Fleury; in theology, the “appellants”; in moral theology, the rigorists. He maintained relations with the various Jansenist circles in Italy, in which he distinguished himself for his learning and outward moderation.
