CANTOR (Le Chantre), Gilles (Gil). - Name of an illiterate layman who was reputed to be the founder of a religious sect that flourished between the end of the 14th century and the first half of the 15th in Brussels and in Flanders.

His followers called themselves Homines intelligentiae and, as regards beliefs, would seem akin to the early "Brethren of the Free Spirit." Among the most prominent adherents whom C. attracted to his group, the Carmelite William of Hindernissen, near Bergen op Zoom, formerly prior at Mechelen and at Brussels, stands out. The members of the group repudiated prayer, Purgatory, the eternity of punishments and the veneration of images. Instead, they admitted lust as a demand of the flesh and eternal salvation for all, not excluding Satan himself. Against the exalted activity of C., Peter of Ailly, bishop of Cambrai, acted in 1410; it is not known, however, by what means or with what outcome.
