BROM, GIESBERT

BROM, GIESBERT. - Dutch priest and historian, born at Utrecht on 3 February 1864, died at Rome on 6 February 1915. He studied in Rome and worked in the Vatican Archives, and this personal experience revealed to him the importance of pontifical documents, particularly for the history of the Church in Holland, as well as for that of his country in general. He was the first director of the Dutch Historical Institute in Rome, founded in 1904.

Among his works are a bullarium of the diocese of Utrecht (Bullarium trajectense. Romanorum pontificum diplomata quotquot olim usque ad Urbanum papam VI (an. 1378) in veterem episcopatum trajectensem destinata reperiuntur... (The Hague 1891–96); a regesta of documents concerning the same diocese (Regesten van oorkonden betreffende het sticht Utrecht [694–1301], Utrecht 1908); catalogues of sources for Dutch history preserved in Italian archives (Archivalia in Italië belangrijk voor de geschiedenis van Nederland, 4 vols., The Hague 1908–14; Romeinsche bronnen voor den kerkelijk-staathundigen toestand der Nederlanden in de 16de eeuw, ibid. 1922, published posthumously in collaboration with Msgr Hensen).
