BRUNO of Carinthia, St. — Bishop of Würzburg, born toward the end of the 10th century, son of Duke Conrad of Carinthia, he came to Italy with Emperor Conrad II and served as chancellor for Italy from 1027 to 1034. From that year until his death he was bishop of Würzburg, displaying extraordinary activity in the religious sphere and zealously promoting the moral and cultural standards of the clergy. His zeal extended well beyond his diocese, so that, through his efforts in organizing the Church in Prussia, he earned the title of Apostle of that region. He died on 27 May 1045 while accompanying Emperor Henry III on an expedition to Hungary. He was buried in the crypt of his cathedral in Würzburg. Canonized, it seems, by Innocent III, his feast is celebrated on 17 May. He left a commentary on the Psalms and other writings of a catechetical nature.
