BRUNO di CARINTIA, saint. - Bishop of Würzburg, born towards the end of the 10th century, son of Duke Corrado di Carintia, he descended into Italy with Emperor Corrado II and held the office of chancellor for Italy from 1027 to 1034. From that year until his death he was bishop of Würzburg, carrying on very extensive activity in the religious field and devoting particular fervour to the moral and cultural level of the clergy. His zeal extended far beyond the diocese, so that, through the activity he displayed in the ecclesiastical organization of Prussia, he earned the name of apostle of that region. He died on 27 May 1045, while accompanying Enrico III on an expedition to Hungary. He was buried in the crypt of his cathedral at Würzburg. Canonized, apparently, by Innocenzo III, his feast is celebrated on 17 May. He left a commentary on the Psalms and other writings of a catechetical nature.
