Burdach, Karl Friedrich

BURDACH, KARL FRIEDRICH. - Physician, anatomist and physiologist, b. in 1776, d. in 1847; professor at the University of Königsberg, a great scholar of the anatomy of the central nervous system.

His "Physiology as a Science of Observation" (Italian trans., Venice 1843) was placed on the Index, presumably because of its idealistic tone ("philosophy of nature" of the early Schelling), but the pages on the immortality of the soul make interesting reading.
