CALLONI, VINCENZO. - Franciscan missionary, b. in S. Maria a Colle (Lucca) on 24 March 1844. Sent to the missionary college of S. Carlo in S. Lorenzo, province of Santa Fe in Argentina, where he arrived in Dec. 1869. He remained a missionary there for 50 years, having in the meantime been elected twice prefect of that mission, namely in 1879 and in 1892.
On 14 May 1904 he was appointed guardian of the aforementioned college, where he was also master of novices, lecturer in dogmatic theology and a skilled orator. Despite his irreproachable conduct and the good of his apostolate, he was the target of attacks. He died on 6 Apr. 1920 in his mission, which he also distinguished with the following works: Apuntes históricos sobre la fundación del Colegio de S. C., ilustrado con varias vistas y retratos (Santa Fe 1897); Relatio r. p. Vincentii Calloni Min. Obs. Missionum Praefecti collegii S. Caroli in Rep. Argentina ab an. 1879 ad 1882 (in Acta Ordinis Minorum, Quaracchi 1890, pp. 41-47).
