CALLOT, JACQUES. - Engraver and draughtsman, b. at Nancy around 1594, d. there in 1635. In 1608 he reached Italy, after having made his first experiments in engraving in 1607.
In Florence in 1611 the grand duke assigned him a pension and lodgings in the palace, and he executed the three sheets of the Guerra d'Amore (1615) and the 50 plates of Capricci, of various figures (1617); of 1620 is the famous Fiera dell'Impruneta. On the death of Cosimo II in 1621, C. returned to Nancy, where he executed many engravings also of a religious character, still admired today: Martyrdom of St. Sebastian (1623), the Book of Saints. The Miseries of War (1633) are a protest against the invasion of Lorraine by order of Richelieu, and make of him a bold forerunner of Goya's Désastres de la guerre.
C.'s style shuns descriptive details, and is rather directed toward the essential and illustrative representation of his subjects. The drawings are important, many of which are in the Uffizi in Florence.
