CANALI, LUIGI da PARMA. — Minister General of the Friars Minor and titular Archbishop of Ptolemais, b. at Parma on 9 Feb. 1836, d. there on 22 Apr. 1905. He became a Franciscan in the province of the Most Holy Redeemer in Bologna in 1852; was ordained priest in 1858, and taught philosophy and theology from 1860 to 1866, that is, until the suppression of the convents. He then devoted himself to preaching and to the care of the parish of the Most Holy Annunciation in Parma. After the reconstitution of the religious province, he was its first provincial minister from 1882 to 1889, and at the General Chapter held in Rome on 3 Oct. 1889, he was elected Minister General of the Order. He inaugurated the college of St. Anthony in Rome (1890) and visited many provinces and also the Holy Land, but his greatest merit was in preparing the reunion of the various branches of his Order, which was proclaimed and sanctioned by Leo XIII in the bull *Felicitate quadam* of 4 Oct. 1897. He then retired to his own province, which elected him minister again in 1900. The following year he was raised to the episcopal dignity and shortly afterwards, on 14 Sept. of the same year, he was unofficially informed by Rome of his appointment to the see of Reggio Emilia, which he immediately declined on account of his poor health and advanced age. In 1904 he was again apostolic visitor of the dioceses of Milan, Como, and Lodi. His noble character, his affability, and his prudence in government had won him the esteem of all. Besides various discourses on studies, the Immaculate Conception, St. Bonaventure, etc., and the official encyclicals, he published a *Life of the Blessed John of Parma* (Quaracchi 1900); *From Rome to Jerusalem* (Vanves near Paris 1894; French trans., ibid. 1894).
