CANORI-MORA, ELISABETTA, Venerable. – Born in Rome on 21 November 1774, died there on 5 February 1825.
Of a distinguished Roman family, she was sent to the Augustinian monastery of St Rita at La Cassia to be educated, but left after three years on account of poor health. In 1796 she married Cristoforo Mora, a doctor of medicine. In her marriage Elisabetta suffered greatly from her husband’s jealousy and unfaithfulness, and his extravagance brought the family to the brink of poverty. She endured all with admirable patience, devoting herself to the education of her daughters and to a life of piety, joining the Third Order of the Trinitarians. She received supernatural gifts, ecstasies, visions, and prophecies; she also endured the pains of the mystical night and suffered assaults and vexations from the devil. The first fruit of her continual sufferings was the conversion of her husband, who, after she was widowed, became a religious among the Conventual Franciscans, where he lived and died as a good priest.
Pius IX introduced the cause of beatification in 1864, and Pius XI declared the heroicity of her virtues on 26 February 1928.
