CANORI-MORA, ELISABETTA, venerable. - B. in Rome on 21 Nov. 1774, d. there on 5 Feb. 1825.
Born into a distinguished Roman family, she was sent to the monastery of the Augustinian nuns of S. Rita, at Cascia, to be educated there, but left after three years because of poor health. In 1796 she married Cristoforo Mora, a doctor of medicine. In marriage Elisabetta suffered greatly from her husband's jealousy and infidelities, and his dissipation also reduced the family almost to poverty. She endured everything with admirable patience, devoting herself to the education of her daughters and to a life of piety, enrolling in the Third Order of the Trinitarians. She received supernatural gifts, ecstasies, visions, and prophecies; she also endured the sufferings of the mystical night, and suffered assaults and vexations by the devil. The first fruit of her continual sufferings was the conversion of her husband who, having become a widower, entered religious life among the Conventual Minors, where he lived and died as a good priest.
Pius IX introduced the cause of beatification in 1864, and Pius XI proclaimed the heroicity of her virtues on 26 Feb. 1928.
