CAPSUCCHI, RAIMONDO. - Dominican theologian and cardinal, born in Rome on 5 Nov. 1616, died there on 22 Apr. 1691. He entered the Dominican convent of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome (8 June 1630), where he studied and later taught for several years. He became Master of Theology in 1644, was socius of the Master of the Sacred Apostolic Palace, and subsequently secretary of the Congregation of the Index (1650–54). He served as Master of the Sacred Apostolic Palace from 1654 to 1663, when he was forced to resign due to the envy and machinations of his adversaries. Ten years later (10 Jan. 1673), with widespread approval, Clement X reinstated him to that delicate office and also appointed him consultor to various Roman congregations. He was created cardinal on 4 Sept. 1681. He was buried in the family chapel in Santa Maria in Portico; his heart is preserved in the basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva.
He left various theological, historical, and oratorical works, including: *Controversiae theologicae selectae scholasticae, morales, dogmaticae, scripturales ad mentem divi Thomae* (Rome 1670); *Appendices ad easdem controversias theologicae* (ibid. 1671); both works were revised and reissued in Rome in 1678; *Quaestiones theologicae selectae morales et dogmaticae*, to which is appended a *Dissertatio historico-theologica de haereticis praedestinatiensis et illorum erroribus* (ibid. 1648).
