CARAYON, AUGUSTE. - French Jesuit and historian, b. at Saumur on 31 March 1813, d. at Poitiers on 15 May 1874. Having entered the Society in 1841 when already a priest, he held various offices in the houses of Brugerette, Laval, Amiens, Paris and Poitiers.
He published a Histoire abrégée des Congrégations de la T. S. Vierge (Paris 1863), a Bibliographie historique de la Compagnie de Jésus (ibid. 1864) and a vast series of Documents inédits concernant la Compagnie de Jésus (23 vols., Poitiers 1863-86; the last vol. posthumous), concerning the history of the Society in France, the suppression of the Order, and the history of the missions. C. also edited the reprint of various ascetic opuscules of ancient Jesuits.
