CARAYON, AUGUSTE. — French Jesuit and historian, born in Saumur on 31 March 1813, died in Poitiers on 15 May 1874. He entered the Society in 1841, already a priest, and held various positions in the houses at Brugerette, Laval, Amiens, Paris, and Poitiers.
He published a Histoire abrégée des Congrégations de la T. S. Vierge (Paris 1863), a Bibliographie historique de la Compagnie de Jésus (ibid. 1864), and an extensive series of Documents inédits concernant la Compagnie de Jésus (23 vols., Poitiers 1863–86; the last volume posthumous), concerning the history of the Society in France, the suppression of the Order, and the history of the missions. C. also supervised the reprinting of various ascetical pamphlets by earlier Jesuits.
