CARDAVERAZ, AGUSTÍN. - Spanish Jesuit, b. at Hernani (Guipúzcoa) on 28 Dec. 1703, entered the novitiate of Loyola in 1724. After completing his studies and teaching grammar and philosophy for a few years, he remained for fully 31 years attached to the house of Loyola, 19 of them in the ministry of sacred missions in the Basque provinces, then, when his strength declined, in that of the Spiritual Exercises at Loyola itself. In 1767 he was deported to Italy with the other Spanish Jesuits by order of Charles III and d. on 18 Oct. 1770 at Castel S. Giovanni near Bologna.
C. enjoyed great fame for the holiness of his life and his high gifts of prayer. Already from the time of his studies in theology he was, with his companion and friend, the Ven. Fr. Bernardo de Hoyos, one of the principal apostles of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Spain. He left ascetical writings and books of devotion in the Basque language (a treatise on the Christian life; considerations for the Spiritual Exercises, etc.), listed in Sommervogel, II, coll. 729-32, and better in J. Uriarte-M. Lecina, Bibl. de escritores de la Comp. de Jesús... de España (II, Madrid 1930, pp. 98-108).
