CARLETTI, TERENZIO. - Prelate and magistrate, b. at Pesaro on 24 Sept. 1807, d. at Rome on 19 Dec. 1896. He held the offices of ponente of the S. Congregazione del Buon Governo, of apostolic delegate in Orvieto, Camerino and Rieti, and of ponente at the Tribunal of the S. Consulta.
The not insignificant part he played in complex trials for lese-majesty against innovators, often guilty of atrocious crimes of blood out of partisan spirit, placed the figure of C. in an unfavorable light among contemporary and later liberal historians. But the many accusations and the various recriminations fall away in the light of modern research, when due account is taken of the usages, the customs, and the state of mind of the milieu, and of notable examples from every age and every place. Even the extreme penalty inflicted on the unfortunate Giuseppe Monti and Gaetano Tognetti appeared, even to the unsuspected Ruggero Bonghi, fully justified by the very legal gravity of the useless and barbarous attempt committed, which, among other things, cut short the lives of several unarmed soldiers and of some innocent civilians.
