CARNEVALI, Giovanni, known as il Piccio. — Painter, born in Montegrino near Luino on 29 Sept. 1806, died in Caltaro sul Po on 10 July 1873.
One of his earliest works, the Deposition from the Cross (1820), met with approval. His later works, such as the Death of Abel, the Holy Family, the Education of the Virgin (1826), and Hagar in the Desert (1820), show him almost untouched by the then-dominant neoclassical rhetoric and rather a follower of the Lombard and Emilian tradition. His multifaceted pictorial output, and in particular the series of portraits, in which he blends the sober grace of Lombardy with his own healthy constructive vigour, demonstrates that he understood colour as a richness and vibration of similar tones, persisting through lights, shadows, and half-tones.
