CESARIANO, CESARE. — Architect, painter, art writer, born in Milan in 1443, died on 30 March 1543. He trained under Leonardo and Bramante.
He worked for four years (1503–1507) in Reggio. In 1508 he frescoed the sacristy of the church of S. Giovanni Evangelista in Parma.
He then went to Rome and Ferrara, where at the university he pursued philosophical and mathematical studies. In 1513 he is found in Milan as ducal engineer to Massimiliano Sforza and engaged in painting for the Duomo works. Also in 1513 he presented the model for the atrium of the church of S. Marco near S. Celso. He studied Vitruvius and in 1521 published a Commentary on Vitruvius himself; in 1527 he built the castle of Porta Giovia and in 1533 was appointed city architect of Milan.
