CASTAGNETTO, CESARE TRABUCCO DI. - Born on June 1, 1802 in Turin, died on Oct. 25, 1888 in Moncalieri; he first embraced the career of the magistracy, which he abandoned to go to the side of Charles Albert, then prince of Carignano, as private secretary. He remained in the prince's service even after his accession to the throne, and was appointed intendant of the Royal Household, a post he kept until the king's abdication. Created senator on Apr. 3,

1848, he manifested during his parliamentary activity sentiments of liberty and of Catholicism together.

Taking the floor on Apr. 23, 1855 during the general discussion of the bill on the suppression of religious communities, the count of C. rightly wished to point out that "it would be a true sophism to believe it possible to pass the present law without abrogating art. 1 of the Statute."

After the capture of Rome, in the sittings of Dec. 28, 1870 and Apr. 21, 1871, C. declared that he did not accept the plebiscite of the Roman provinces, and that he was opposed to the Law of Guarantees, because it was injurious to the free exercise of the pope's spiritual authority.
