CASTRO PALAO, FERNAND DE

CASTRO PALAO, Fernand de. - Jesuit, moralist, b. at León in 1581; d. at Medina on 1 Dec. 1633. He first taught philosophy at Valladolid, then moral theology at Compostella and Salamanca, with an extraordinary attendance of listeners, consulted from all quarters, even by the tribunal of the Inquisition, on the most serious cases.

He published a complete course of moral theology in 7 vols.: *De virtutibus et vitiis contrariis* (Lyons 1631); *De virtute religionis et annexis* (2 vols., ibid. 1635-39); *De Sacramentis* (2 vols., ibid. 1647); *De censuris* (ibid. 1647); *De institio et iure* (ibid. 1651). Profound, prudent and measured, and held in great esteem by St. Alphonsus Liguori, he is considered one of the classics in the field.
