CASTRO PALAO, FERNAND DE. - Jesuit, moralist, b. at León in 1581; d. at Medina on 1 December 1633. He first taught philosophy at Valladolid, then moral theology at Compostela and at Salamanca, with an extraordinary concourse of hearers, consulted from every side, even by the tribunal of the Inquisition, regarding the gravest cases.

He published a complete course of moral theology in 7 vols.: De virtutibus et vitiis contrariis (Lyons 1631); De virtute religionis et annexis (2 vols., ibid. 1635-39); De Sacramentis (2 vols., ibid. 1647); De censuris (ibid. 1647); De iustitia et iure (ibid. 1651). Profound, prudent and judicious and held in great esteem by St. Alphonsus Liguori, he is regarded as one of the classics in the field.
