CATHOLIC WORLD MAGAZINE. – Catholic monthly magazine published from 1865 in the United States of America, on the initiative of Fr. Isacco Tommaso Hecker, founder of the Paulists (1819–88). It deals with current Catholic issues, including cultural ones, and represented a widely circulated organ of the Church’s thought, thereby earning the praise of the Second Plenary Council of Baltimore. During its first five years, its editor was the convert and former Episcopalian John B. Green Hassard (1836–90), while its publisher was the dynamic Irish emigrant Laurence Kehol (1832–90), who made this publication a genuine success for the Catholic Publication Society of New York.
