CATHOLIC WORLD MAGAZINE. - A monthly Catholic review published since 1865 in the United States of America, initiated by Fr. Isaac Thomas Hecker, founder of the Paulists (1819–88). It addresses current Catholic issues, including cultural ones, and served as a widely circulated organ of Church thought, earning praise from the Second Plenary Council of Baltimore. Its first five-year director was the convert, formerly Episcopalian, John B. Green Hassard (1836–90), and its publisher was the Irish-born journalist Laurence Kehoe (1832–90), who made this publication a notable success for the Catholic Publication Society of New York.
