CATHOLIC WORLD MAGAZINE. - A monthly Catholic magazine published from 1865 in the United States of America, on the initiative of Fr. Isaac Thomas Hecker, founder of the Paulists (1819-88). It dealt with current Catholic issues, including cultural ones, and represented an organ of wide diffusion of the Church's thought, so as to obtain the praise of the Second Plenary Council of Baltimore. Its director during the first five years was the convert, formerly an Episcopalian, John B. Green Hassard (1836-90), and its publisher the dynamic Irish emigrant Laurence Kehol (1832-90), who made of this publication a real success for the Catholic Publication Society of New York.
