CELSUS. – A Christian writer who faithfully translated from Greek the dialogue of Ariston of Pella and dedicated it to a Bishop Vigilius with a lengthy preface. This Vigilius does not appear to be the Bishop of Tapsus (q.v.) from the end of the 5th century, given Celsus’ interest in anti-Judaic polemic and his archaic Christological terminology. The mention of a severe persecution should therefore refer to that of Valerian or Maximian, and the work should be attributed to the 3rd century.
