CICATELLI, SANZIO. - Born in Napoli in 1570, died there on 29 June 1627. Received at the age Camillo de Lellis (v.) into his Company, founded in 1584, he was among the first professed members of the Order Ministers of the Sick (v.), on 8 Dec. 1591 in Roma. For twenty-five years he was the Saint’s companion in labours and government, succeeding him as the third superior general of the Order (1619–25).
A learned and pious priest, he faithfully took note of what he observed and gathered from eyewitnesses, preserving whatever deserved to be remembered concerning the person of the founder and his foundation. Thus, at Camillo’s death (14 July 1614), C. had ready the manuscript of his life, which appeared in print the following year (1615) in Viterbo. During the twelve years that he survived, he supervised two further editions (1620 and 1624), whereas the last (1627), prepared from the apostolic proceedings and published after C.’s death, was probably interpolated. The life of Fr. Camillo by C. met with wide favour and remains, in its authentic editions, a document of great importance also for the history of the hospitals of the period.
