SANZIO CICATELLI. - Born in Naples in 1570, died there on 29 June 1627. Having been received at the age of nineteen by Camillus de Lellis (q.v.) into his Company, which had been founded in 1584, he was among the first professed members of the Order of the Ministers of the Sick (q.v.) on 8 December 1591 in Rome. For 25 years he was Camillus’s companion in toil and governance, succeeding him as the third Superior General of the Order (1619–25).
A learned and pious priest, he carefully recorded what he observed and gathered from eyewitnesses, preserving what was worthy of remembrance concerning the founder’s person and his foundation. Thus, at the death of Camillus (14 July 1614), C. had ready the manuscript of his life, which appeared in print the following year (1615) in Viterbo. During the twelve years he survived, he supervised two further editions (1620 and 1624), while the final one (1627), prepared on the basis of the apostolic processes and published after C.’s death, was probably interpolated. C.’s life of Fr Camillus enjoyed wide favor and remains, in its authentic editions, a document of great importance even for the history of hospitals of the time.
