CARCERERI, STANISLAO. - Of the Ministers of the Sick, missionary in Central Africa. Born at Cerro Veronese on 19 Jan. 1840, died at Bovolone (Verona) on 5 March 1899. He entered the Order of St. Camillus in 1851 and was ordained priest in 1862. In 1859, not yet a priest, he had assisted the wounded of the battle of S. Martino and Solferino, and in 1866 he assisted those of Custoza. From 1867 to 1877, with several of his confrères, whom he was placed in charge of, he assisted mons. Comboni in the mission of Central Africa, displaying great initiative and organizational ability.
Having returned to his homeland, he was superior of the Camillian house at Lille in France and at Roermond in Holland, and held the office of procurator general and then of vicar general of his Order. The first geographical map of the Kordofan region, which he had explored in 1870-71, is due to him.
C. also wrote several interesting reports on the mission of Central Africa.
