CLEMENTE, IL. - Prospero Sogari, known as Il Clemente, sculptor and goldsmith, born in Reggio Emilia on 16 February 1516, died there on 25 May 1584.
He was influenced by ancient statuary and by Michelangelo, whom he imitated both in the *Adam and Eve* (1557) on the portal of the Reggio Emilia cathedral and in the *Christ Carrying the Cross* in the same church, as well as in the numerous funerary monuments he erected in the cathedral and in S. Prospero in Reggio Emilia, where he diminished the architectural effect with an overabundance of ornamentation. His best works are perhaps some busts in the museum of Reggio.
