CLEMENTE, IL. — Sogari Prospero, known as il C., sculptor and goldsmith, born in Reggio Emilia on 16 February 1516, died there on 25 May 1584.
He was influenced by ancient statuary and by Michelangelo, whom he imitated both in the Adam and Eve (1557) of the portal of the cathedral of Reggio Emilia and in the Christ Carrying the Cross in the same church, as well as in the funerary monuments he erected in great numbers in the Cathedral and in S. Prospero of Reggio Emilia, diminishing the architectural effect through an excess of ornamentation. His finest works are perhaps several busts in the museum of Reggio.
