CLEMENTE, IL. - Sogari Prospero, known as il C., sculptor and goldsmith, b. at Reggio Emilia on 16 February 1516, d. there on 25 May 1584.

He was influenced by ancient statuary and by Michelangelo, whom he imitated both in the Adam and Eve (1557) of the portal of the cathedral of Reggio Emilia and in the Christ Carrying the Cross of the same church, and also in the funerary monuments that he erected in large numbers in the Cathedral and in S. Prospero in Reggio Emilia, impoverishing the architectural effect with an overabundance of ornament. His best works are perhaps certain busts in the museum of Reggio.
