Calamatta, Luigi

CALAMATTA, LUIGI. - Engraver and lithographer, b. at Civitavecchia on June 21, 1801 or June 12, 1802; d. at Milan on March 8, 1869. From 1822 he lived predominantly in Paris, where he was an enthusiastic follower of Ingres, and in Brussels, where he taught the art of the burin for many years. Having returned to Italy, he took part in the campaign of 1866. His work, consisting of about eighty burin engravings, reproducing paintings by Ingres, paintings by the great Italian masters and a few autograph portraits, is remarkable for softness and variety of drawing.
