BUSI, Luigi. – Painter, b. in Bologna on 8 May 1838, d. there on 2 June 1884. In Rome, where he perfected his studies in painting, he formed friendships with the principal exponents of the artistic renewal and followed their lead in a moderate fashion, as is shown by the fresco and oil works he executed after his return to his native city; in these works the concern for the subject, rendered with impeccable drawing, prevails over lyrical emotion.
Among these should be recalled The Martyrdom of the Two Saints in the Church of S. Vitale e Agricola in Bologna, Jacob and Rachel, The Daughter of Jephthah, and, for the polemical significance it carries, the painting entitled: Consequences of a Marriage Only Religious (1875).
