BUSI, LUIGI. — Painter, born in Bologna on 1/8 May 1838, died there on 2 June 1884. In Rome, where he perfected his studies in painting, he formed friendships with the principal exponents of artistic renewal and moderately followed in their footsteps, as demonstrated by the frescoes and oil paintings he produced after returning to his native city; works in which concern for the subject, rendered with impeccable draughtsmanship, prevails over lyrical emotion.
Among these, the Martyrdom of the two Saints in the Church of S. Vitale and Agricola in Bologna, Jacob and Rachel, Jephthah’s Daughter and, because of its polemical significance, the painting entitled Consequences of a Merely Religious Marriage (1875) should be remembered.
