BRUSTOLON, ANDREA. - Sculptor and carver b. 20 July 1662 at Belluno, where he also d. 25 Oct. 1732. Having learned the rudiments of the art in the school of his father, a wood carver, and in that of Agostino Ridolfi, a painter of Belluno, he completed his artistic training in Venice in the studio of the Genoese sculptor Filippo Parodi, a disciple of Bernini, and even more so in Rome.
The traces of this Baroque and Berninian education of his are very evident in certain sculptures (the Angel of the sacristy of S. Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the noble "Venier", the Assumption of the Seminary of Feltre), as well as in certain iconographic details, such as the reclining pose of the Magdalene Correr, reminiscent of Bernini's St. Teresa. Other works: the Altar of the Souls for the church of St. Florian of Zoldo, lugubriously adorned with skulls and skeletons; the altar of the Holy Cross at Mareson (Zoldo) with a Deposition and the statues of St. John and the Magdalene; that of the B. V. Addolorata at Dosoledo in Comelico, coated with a sober polychromy, as his sculptures often are, in homage to the local tradition, surpassed but not forgotten; the St. Theodora for the Church of St. James at Feltre, as well as numerous Crucifixes and other works on sacred and secular subjects, scattered in the public and private galleries of the Veneto, and in particular of Venice and the Belluno area.
