BRAMBILLA, FRANCESCO IL VECCHIO

BRAMBILLA, FRANCESCO THE ELDER. - Sculptor, died in Milan in 1570, author of statues and reliefs in the Cathedral of that city, among which should be remembered the marble panels for the organ, executed in collaboration with Martino di Vimercate, the corbel for the statue of Pius IV, judged "stupendous" by Vasari (ed. Milanesi, VI, Florence 1878, p. 517) and the model for the Door toward Compedo. He is often confused with Francesco Brambilla the Younger (v.) because of Milanesi's inaccurate commentary on the cited passage from Vasari.
