CLEMENTE, saint. — Byzantine hymnographer, who lived in the 9th century. It seems certain that he was a monk of the Stoudion and not at Grottaferrata, as G. Sciommari believed (Vita s. Bartholomaei, Rome 1728, p. 120).
He composed several canons, that is, rhythmic hymns of a type inaugurated a century earlier by St. Andrew of Crete. Nine of these have been published. Another ten similar compositions, preserved unpublished in the abbey library of Grottaferrata, are also attributed to him. It is probable that the study of the innumerable liturgical manuscripts buried in libraries will considerably lengthen the list of the canons of C. He died in exile for having defended orthodoxy in the iconoclastic struggles. He is currently celebrated by the Greek Church on 30 April.
