COLLUTHUS. - A schismatic Alexandrian priest who, during the episcopate of Alexander (312-28), arrogated to himself the power to ordain priests and deacons, consecrating against every ecclesiastical law all who turned to him. From this arose a schism. It appears, however, that he too, in agreement on this point with Alexander, opposed Arius and his doctrines. When, around 324, Hosius, on Constantine's commission, came to Alexandria and convened a council of the bishops of Egypt, C., who had in the meantime usurped the episcopate, was deposed and declared a simple priest, while Ischyras, who claimed to have been ordained a priest by him, was restored to the lay state. The end of C. is not known.
