CLOE. — In 1 Cor 1:11, St Paul writes: “It has been reported to me, my brothers, by those of CLOE (Χλῶης), that there are quarrels among you.” Expressions of this kind normally indicate the household (including slaves and freedmen) of the person named (cf. Rom 16:10–11). Since the First Epistle to the Corinthians was written from Ephesus, it is likely that CLOE lived in Corinth and that some members of her household, having gone to Ephesus, informed the Apostle. Others hold that CLOE lived in Ephesus. Some, like St Ambrose, believe that CLOE is the name of a place.
