CLOE. – In I Cor. 1:11, St. Paolo writes: “It has been reported to me concerning you, my brothers, by those of C. (ὁπὸ τῶν Χλῶς) that there are factions among you.” Expressions of this kind normally indicate the household members (including slaves and freedmen) of the person named (cf. Rom. 16:10–11). Since the First Epistle to the Corinthians was written from Ephesus, it is probable that C. lived in Corinth and that some members of her household, having gone to Ephesus, informed the Apostle. Others think that C. lived in Ephesus. Some, like St. Ambrogio, believe that C. is a place-name.
