Ambrogi, Anton Maria

AMBROGI, ANTON MARIA. - Jesuit, born in Florence on 13 June 1713, died in Rome on 11 February 1788. A cultured and scholarly writer, he taught eloquence and poetry at the Collegio Romano for some thirty years, acquiring great fame especially for his translation of the Works of Virgil (the best edition, Rome 1763-65) and of the Selected Letters of Cicero (Rome 1780), and for the erudite and acute notes with which he chose to accompany them. He also gave a great impulse to the theater of the Jesuits, composing biblical tragedies and translating, adapting them, eight tragedies of Voltaire (Florence 1752). The illustrative work of the collections of the Kircherian Museum, now partly in the Pigorini Prehistoric-Ethnographic Museum, Musaei Kircheriani in Romano Soc. Jesu Collegio aerea notis illustrata (Rome 1763-65), is attributed to him; the work, however, is by Fr. Contuccio Contucci, curator and reorganizer of the Museum; it is probable that the A. participated in it.
