COLONNA, FRANCESCO. - Dominican and writer, b. at Treviso ca. 1432 or 1433, d. ca. 1527.
From an acrostic: Poliam frater Franciscus Colonna peramavit, he is considered the author of the singular novel Hypnerotomachia Polypilili (The Strife of Love in a Dream, or The Dream of Poliphilus), completed in 1467 and printed in 1499 from the presses of Manutius, adorned with engravings, a masterpiece of the book art of the Renaissance. The imaginative narrative, in a language mixing Italian and Latin, in a curious syncretism of medieval allegorism and pagan mysticism, describes the ideal journey of Poliphilus to win his beloved Polia through the realms of art and freedom, until he comes into the presence of Venus.
