COUSSEMAKER, CHARLES-EDMOND-HENRI de. - Musicologist, b. at Beilleul on 19 Apr. 1805, d. at Lille on 10 Jan. 1876.

He studied law in Paris and was a judge in the courts of Cambrai, Dunkerque, Lille, etc., devoting himself at the same time to music, composing masses and motets. The most significant work is that which he carried out in musicology, especially for the musical Middle Ages, publishing a great quantity of treatises in the collection Scriptores de musica media aevi (4 vols., 1864-76), with which he continued the undertaking of M. Gerbert. In addition to numerous monographs, often of considerable size, such as the Histoire de l'harmonie au moyen âge (Paris 1852) and the Art harmonique au XIIIe et XIIIe siècle (Lille 1865), etc., he printed the works of the trouvère Adam de la Halle (ibid. 1872), the Trattato di Musica of J. Tinctoris (ibid. 1875), Mémoires sur Huchald (Douai 1841), etc. His work, even if imperfect because of paleographic studies still insufficient and because of the scanty scientific basis of his philological preparation, marks a valid contribution to the historiography of medieval music.
