COYSEVOX, CHARLES-ANTOINE. - Sculptor, born in Lyon on 29 Sept. 1640, died in Paris on 10 Oct. 1720.
Initially he followed the Berninian manner, then he asserted his own personality and contributed to the formation of French taste and style in the 18th century. Until his death Coysévox directed the works for the decoration of Versailles; but his most original production is to be found in his busts and portraits, among which deserve special mention those of the Grand Condé, of Louis XIV, and of Maria Adelaide, Duchess of Burgundy, as Diana the Huntress (1710).
In the field of sacred art he left numerous funerary monuments, particularly noteworthy among them being those of Colbert, of Mazarin (1692), and of the painter Le Brun (1693).
