Coysevox, Charles-Antoine

COYSEVOX, CHARLES-ANTOINE. - Sculptor, b. in Lyon on 29 Sept. 1640, d. in Paris on 10 Oct. 1720.

He first followed the Berninian manner, then asserted his own personality and contributed to the formation of the French taste and style of the eighteenth century. Until his death C. directed the work of the decoration of Versailles; but his most original production is to be sought in his busts and portraits, among which special mention is due to those of the Great Condé, of Louis XIV and of Marie Adelaide, Duchess of Burgundy, in the guise of Diana the Huntress (1710).

In the field of sacred art he left numerous funerary monuments, among which particularly notable are those of Colbert, of Mazarin (1692) and of the painter Lebrun (1693).
