CZERNY, Karl. — Musician, b. in Vienna on 20 Feb. 1791, d. there on 15 July 1857. A celebrated pianist, pupil of Beethoven and teacher of a host of illustrious musicians, he was one of the most brilliant and elegant composers of the 19th century. Besides the many important studies for the piano, he wrote sonatas and fantasias for piano, chamber instrumental music, some twenty Masses, several *Requiems*, a large number of motets, offertories and various other compositions for the church.
