CZERNY, KARL. - Musician, b. in Vienna on 20 February 1791, d. there on 15 July 1857. A celebrated pianist, a pupil of Beethoven and teacher of a host of illustrious musicians, he was one of the most brilliant and elegant composers of the 19th century. Besides the many studies of great importance for the piano, he wrote sonatas and fantasies for piano, instrumental chamber music, about twenty Masses, several Requiems, a great number of motets, offertories and various other compositions for church.
