CZERNY, KARL. – Musician, born in Vienna on 20 February 1791, died there on 15 July 1857. A celebrated pianist, pupil of Beethoven and teacher of a host of illustrious musicians, he was one of the most brilliant and elegant composers of the 19th century. In addition to numerous studies of great importance for the piano, he wrote sonatas and fantasies for piano, instrumental chamber music, about twenty Masses, several Requiem settings, a large number of motets, offertories, and various other compositions for the Church.
