CZARTORYSKI, AUGUST. - Polish priest, b. in Paris on 2 Aug. 1858, d. at Alassio on 8 Apr. 1893, one year after his priestly ordination. His princely house was intimately linked to the history of Poland, from which his ancestors had departed because of the well-known political events. He spent his youth in Paris, Poland, Spain and Italy in contact with the highest society and with the international aristocracy. In Turin he matured his Salesian vocation, and by St. John Bosco, at the insistence of Leo XIII, he was admitted into his institute on 24 Nov. 1887. Through the practice of penance, humility and prayer he ascended to the highest peaks of holiness. He was buried in the family tomb at Sieniawa (Poland). The cause of beatification was introduced by decree of 23 March 1941 (AAS, 33 [1941], pp. 374-76).
