CZARTORISKI, AUGUST. — Polish priest, born in Paris on 2 August 1858 and died at Alassio on 8 April 1893, one year after his priestly ordination. His princely family was intimately bound up with the history of Poland, from which his forebears had departed because of the well-known political events. He spent his youth in Paris, Poland, Spain, and Italy, in contact with the highest society and the international aristocracy. In Turin he discerned his Salesian vocation, and, at the insistence of Leo XIII, was admitted by s. Giovanni Bosco to his institute on 24 November 1887. Through the practice of penance, humility, and prayer, he ascended to the highest heights of sanctity. He was buried in the family tomb at Sieniawa (Poland). The cause of beatification was introduced by decree of 23 March 1941 (AAS, 33 [1941], pp. 374–76).
