CZARTORISKI, August. - Polish priest, b. in Paris on 2 Aug. 1858, d. at Alassio on 8 Apr. 1893, one year after his priestly ordination. His princely house was closely tied to the history of Poland, from which his ancestors had departed because of the well-known political events. He spent his youth in Paris, Poland, Spain, and Italy, in contact with high society and international aristocracy. In Turin, his Salesian vocation matured, and through the insistence of Leo XIII, he was admitted into Don Bosco’s institute on 24 Nov. 1887. Through the practice of penance, humility, and prayer, he ascended to the highest peaks of holiness. He was buried in the family tomb at Sieniawa (Poland). The cause of beatification was introduced by decree on 23 Mar. 1941 (AAS, 33 [1941], pp. 374-76).
