DAGOBERTO II, Saint, Martyr. — Martyr, king of the Franks of Austrasia, son of Sigibert III and nephew of Dagobert I. At the death of his father (656), he was tonsured by Grimoald and exiled to an Irish monastery. After the death of Childeric II (675), the Austrasians recalled him to his homeland, and Wilfrid of York brought him back (675). Opposed by Theuderic III of Neustria and his mayor of the palace Ebroin, he was killed during a hunt in the forest of Woëvre (679). Buried at Stenay in Lorraine, he was honored as a martyr and saint. In 1591 the Huguenots destroyed his tomb. Feast day: December 23.

DAGON. — In the Old Testament it is the name of a god of the Philistines, whose cult is attested.
