DAHN, JULIUS SOPHUS FELIX. - German writer, historian and jurist, b. in Hamburg on 9 February 1834, d. in Breslau on 3 January 1912. A fervent nationalist, he was greatly influenced by the atmosphere of the years around 1870 and by the Kulturkampf that was then unfolding.
An author of legal and historical works, he was led by his romantic temperament to exalt the Germanic peoples and Nordic antiquities in vast and theatrical historical novels, in which the anti-Roman and anti-Catholic tendency is always present, if not indeed anti-Christian. Among them are recalled: Ein Kampf um Rom (1876), his best work; Julian der Abtrünnige (Leipzig 1893) and Karl der Grosse und seine Palladine, in the last of which he depicts in dark colors the work of Christianization carried out by Charlemagne. Also typical of his position are the Romane aus der altnordischen Göttersage (Berlin 1880-89). The value of his lyric poetry and his dramas is slight.
