Eyb, Albrecht von

EYB, ALBRECHT von. - German writer, b. near Ansbach on 24 Aug. 1420 and d. at Eichstätt on 24 July 1475. After studying at the University of Padua he was successively canon at Bamberg, archdeacon at Würzburg and chamberlain of Pius II.

His works display a direct knowledge of Italian humanism. The Spiegel der Sitten (Mirror of Customs) consists for the most part of translations from the Church Fathers and from ancient Latin and Italian authors. More original is the work on the suitability of marriage (Ob einem Manne sey zenemen ein eelich Weib oder nit), where various quotations alternate with lively and delicate tales such as "Der Huge Procurator" (The Cunning Procurator) and a reworking of the legend of Gregory on the rock.
