DE MARCHI, EMILIO. - Novelist, b. in Milan on 31 July 1851, d. there on 6 Feb. 1901. He was secretary of the scientific-literary Academy of his city, a municipal councillor of the moderate party, and a member of the board of the orphanages and charitable institutions.
Having turned to journalism (he was among the founders of Vita nuova), he created the Italian serial novel. To oppose extremist propaganda he published, after 1898, La buona parola, a series of popular reading matter. In his novels (Il cappello del prete [1888]; Demetrio Pianelli [1890]; Arabella [1892]; Giacomo l'ideolista [1897]; Col fuoco non si scherza [1901]), while moving within the tradition of Manzoni, he heeded the suggestions of French and Fogazzarian verism and revealed himself as a courteous and precise narrator. L'Età preziosa (1887), a collection of admonitions to young people from fourteen to twenty years of age, constitutes one of the most nimble and effective manuals of education. He also wrote short stories and a comedy and translated La Fontaine's fables into verse. His Catholic vision did not attain Manzonian serenity: « a wise counsellor when he spoke as an educator, his works of art conclude with torment and desperate anguish. His intuition of life, as it is reflected in his art, was sorrowful » (B. Croce).
