DEMETRIUS CHOMATIANUS. — Archbishop of Ochrida in 1216–17; d. c. 1234. He failed in his attempts to prevent the schism of the Serbian Church in 1220. When Theodore Ducas Angelus of Epirus conquered Thessalonica (1222), D. consecrated him Emperor of the West, which provoked the indignation of Patriarch Germanus II. Theodore’s defeat in 1223 frustrated D.’s plans to become patriarch.
Numerous are D.’s writings, especially in the field of Byzantine law. His letters are of particular interest for history. D.’s works were published by J. B. Pitra, *Analecta sacra et classica*, VI, Rome 1891.
