DEMETRIO COMAZIANO. – Archbishop of Ochrid in 1216–17; died ca. 1234. He failed in his attempts to prevent the schism of the Serbian Church in 1220. When Theodore Dukas Angelos of Epirus conquered Thessalonica (1222), D. consecrated him emperor of the West, which aroused the indignation of Patriarch Germanus II. Theodore’s defeat in 1223 thwarted D.’s plans to become patriarch.
D. left numerous writings, especially in the field of Byzantine law. His letters are of particular interest for history. D.’s works were published by J. B. Pitra, Analecta sacra et classica, VI, Rome 1891.
