DEMOPHILUS. — Bishop of Beroea (Macedonia), Arian, d. ca. 386. Deposed by the Synod of Rimini (359), he obtained from Valens the succession to Eudoxius in the see of Constantinople (370), where he remained until Theodosius I deposed him for rejecting the Nicene Symbol (380). His successor was St. Gregory Nazianzen. D. still appears as an Arian in the Constantinopolitan Synod of 383. His few writings have been lost.
