DOROTEI. - An Arian sect of the followers of Dorotheus, bishop of Antioch (v.). On the death of Demophilus, bishop of Constantinople, the Arians elected Marinus; shortly afterwards, however, they preferred Dorotheus of Antioch to him. Marinus took offense and separated from the Arian community. The breach between the two parties became definitive when Dorotheus, in a public disputation, maintained that, since the Word had been created in time, the Father could not be called such before that same creation, since that name indicates a real relation, thus himself also coming to constitute a new sect within the Arian body. The sect of the D. lasted for about 35 years; in 420, in fact, through the efforts of a certain Plinthus, a general of the army and very influential with Theodosius the Younger, a compromise was reached by establishing that the question would no longer be spoken of. The two sects, that of Marinus and that of the D., returned to the Arian communion.
