MARINUS of CONSTANTINOPLE. - An Arian bishop of Thrace, he was summoned to Constantinople in 386, on the death of Demophilus. Shortly afterward, however, Dorotheus of Antioch was preferred to him, and M. separated from the Arian community, organizing a sect with its own churches for liturgical functions, which was called that of the Mariniani or Psathyriani (cake-makers), from the trade of a certain Theotistus, one of M.'s most ardent followers.

The schism became more acute when the question arose whether the title of Father should be given to God even before He had begotten the Word: whereas Dorotheus denied it, M., to contradict him, affirmed it. Later the sect divided again because of personal quarrels with Agapius, promoted to the see of Ephesus by M. himself. Many then, sickened by these petty internal struggles, returned to the Nicene faith. M.'s schism lasted about 25 years; in 420 an agreement was reached, establishing that the question would no longer be discussed, but the union could be effected only at Constantinople, since elsewhere the separation continued.
