MARIANO AND GIACOMO, Saints, Martyrs. - Africans, they perished in 258 during the persecution of Valerian. They are commemorated in the Martirologio geronimiano on April 30 and May 6, but the true dies natalis is the latter, since it agrees with the Carthaginian Calendar.

The Passio, which has striking resemblances to that of Perpetua and Felicity, especially in the account of certain visions with which the martyrs were favored, was written by a contemporary and companion of the same martyrs, who had already been arrested together with them and then, for some unknown reason, escaped the torture. Finding themselves in a suburb near Cirta together with other companions, M. and G. were arrested and taken to the magistrates of the city. Interrogated and tortured, they were shut up in prison. After some days they were sent to Lambaesis, to the imperial legate, who condemned them to beheading. Their bodies were then thrown into the waters of a river.
