MARIANO DA ROCCA CASALE, Venerable. - Lay brother of the Friars Minor, b. at Rocca Casale (L'Aquila) on 15 Jan. 1778, d. at Civitella, now Bellegra (Rome), on 31 May 1866.

Having made his solemn vows on 3 Sept. 1803, he moved to the convent of Civitella, where, after briefly holding the offices of cook, gardener and questor, he was porter for fifty years. He welcomed everyone with a smile on his face, calmly accepted the rudeness and blows of ill-wishers, consoled the poor, and instructed children in the catechism. Old and freer, he spent, one might say, his days before the Tabernacle. This simple life, but inwardly extraordinary, earned him a reputation for sanctity; and his beatification process was introduced and the heroism of his virtues declared (3 March 1925).
